Raley’s O-N-E Market broke ground Thursday, June 18, at the Riverstone in Madera — the beginning of construction on what will become the master-planned community’s first full-service grocery store and the southernmost location in the Sacramento-based grocer’s footprint.
The 40,000-square-foot store is planned for the corner of Market Avenue West and Riverwalk Boulevard South, with company officials aiming for a March 2027 grand opening.
The project will bring the Raley’s O-N-E Market concept to Madera County, a format centered on organic products, nutrition and education. The store will place a strong emphasis on fresh foods and products vetted around health and wellness standards.
‘Right demographic’
Raley’s currently lists four Raley’s O-N-E Market locations on its corporate fact sheet, part of a 117-store footprint that also includes 74 Raley’s stores, 21 Bel Air Markets and 18 Nob Hill Foods locations. The Riverstone store would add another location to the health-focused banner when it opens.
“It’s the right demographic for the type of store we’re going to build here,” said Michael Teel, chairman, CEO and owner of Raley’s. “I look forward to seeing this community grow and us growing with them.”
Teel said the company views the Riverstone location as an example of the future of grocery retail, with a slightly smaller footprint than traditional supermarkets and a heavy focus on fresh food and healthier produce offerings. He also noted that ground-up grocery developments have become increasingly rare because of rising construction costs and tight industry margins.
Still, Riverstone’s continued expansion and the lack of nearby grocery options made the project appealing.
Wait is almost over
The store has been a long-awaited amenity for Riverstone residents, with community leaders noting that grocery plans have been discussed since the development’s early years. Riverstone began selling homes in 2016 and since has continued rapid expansion, with thousands of additional homes planned in the years ahead.
“To say this is a long time coming is an understatement for this community,” said Madera County Supervisor Jordan Wamhoff. “They started selling homes here in 2016, and I think they’ve been telling everyone that a grocery store is just about a year away.”
Project leaders said the store is expected to act as a catalyst for additional commercial growth while providing residents with convenient access and job opportunities close to home.
“The team will be serving you. They will come from this community,” Teel said. “We want to be a part of that community.”
